MOROCCO – The Newton County Council and Commissioners met for their regular meetings on Oct. 21. The council approved a preliminary Economic Revitalization Area resolution for Duke Energy, which will be asking for a tax abatement on 60 to 80 wind turbines to be constructed in the county.
The area has changed since Duke Energy first approached the county several years ago with a plan to build the large turbines. With the resolution passed, it was a preliminary necessity to an eventual bid for a tax abatement on the turbines. At the council’s November meeting, remonstrance against the abatement will be heard. The council will decide on whether to allow the abatement at that time according to council President Scott Carlson. The council meets on the third Monday of each month at 8 a.m. at the government center in Morocco.
