Gortadruma could be possible windfarm site

Limerick County Council will consider Gortadroma as a possible site for a wind-farm when the landfill is closed next year, members of the Strategic Policy Committee for Planning have been told.

But the council is also resurrecting the idea that somebody would take over the site and has re-advertised for expressions of interest. A similar campaign ran into the sand some years ago.

At a meeting of the planning SPC, Tom Enright director of economic development and planning, pointed that Limerick county council had been very pro-active in encouraging windfarms. “In some parts we are getting to the stage we are a t the limit of what those areas can sustain. There are other areas we can look at as well,” he said.

Engineer Tom O’Neill said that policy in Limeick was “broadly consistent” with other counties bordering it.Regarding Gortadroma as a possible wind-farm site, he said there were still some details to be sorted out regarding infrastructure issues such as pylons. “It is about getting ducks in a row. But it is up for consideration,” Mr O’Neill said.

One of the big pieces of necessary infrastructure was already in place, Mr Enright pointed out, referring to the 112-kilometre connector to the national electricity grid. Cllr Stephen Keary said solar energy shouold also be considered.
