A very costly green gesture

South Wales Evening Post | October 26, 2013 | www.thisissouthwales.co.uk

John Childs implies that if we build sufficient wind turbines our children will be saved from climate change (Have Your Say, Oct 23). Confusingly, he doesn’t say whether “change” means warmer, cooler or both.

Be that as it may, the UK contributes less than 2 per cent of global carbon dioxide (CO2) emission so, even if Britain bulldozed all trace of habitation, industry and transport into the sea, it would reduce global CO2 emission by less than 2 per cent.

However many wind turbines are deployed on every hilltop, only a small fraction of this 2 per cent will be mitigated, in a crass symbolic act, despoiling the countryside for no significant purpose.

It would be the most expensive symbol our nation has ever bought, and if Mr Childs believes it might persuade the developing world to leave its fossil fuel resources in the ground he displays lack of judgement akin to that shown by our present political leaders.
