A subsidiary of gas utility owner New Jersey Resources will spend $22 million to acquire and build a wind farm in Montana, its first onshore wind project, the company said Wednesday.

Wall-based NJR Clean Energy Ventures will build, own and operate the wind farm, called Two Dot, named for the adjacent town 93 miles east of Helena.

The project will have six wind turbines that produce 9.72 megawatts of electricity. The energy produced there will be sold to NorthWestern Energy, which serves 673,000 customers in Montana, South Dakota and Nebraska.

The project was developed by Own Energy Inc., which builds mid-sized wind farms. NJR Clean Energy Ventures acquired 19 percent of OwnEnergy in 2012.

New Jersey Resources also owns New Jersey Natural Gas, which services most of Monmouth, Ocean and Morris counties.
