Turbines kill birds as wind energy continues to receive tax credit benefits

The Naperville Sun | October 20, 2013 | napervillesun.suntimes.com

Those lovely wind turbines we see dotting our landscape are now responsible for killing over 500,000 birds annually.

This includes numerous birds of prey including protected species such golden and bald eagles.

No wind farm has been penalized for violations of the Migratory Bird Treaty or Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act, while the fossil fuel industry is sanctioned for every misstep. Fossil fuel companies can and do pay for the damage they do, as well they should (most recently and famously the BP oil spill).

I’m all for a common sense approach to a cleaner world, but I don’t like the double standards that demonize one industry while allowing another to seemingly operate unchecked because it is anointed as the “good” industry that’s going to save the planet. In the meantime, the wind energy industry’s contributions to reduced carbon-emissions is a mere blip on the radar screen.

There are those who believe a carbon tax needs to be implemented to “level the playing field” with the fossil fuel industry, however, wind energy continues to enjoy huge tax credit benefits that has contributed to the growth of their industry.

This Administration continues to take steps to kill the coal industry, cheered along the way by the environmental extremists. If they have their way, I don’t think any of us will be cheering.

As a taxpayer and avid bird watcher, it doesn’t make me happy to be an inadvertent party to the killing of birds including our national symbol.

What do the environmentalists plan to do about it?
