School’s turbine plan withdrawn

Northumberland Gazette | 13 October 2013 | www.northumberlandgazette.co.uk

A plan to site two micro wind turbines in the grounds of a north Northumberland school has been withdrawn, following objections from the Ministry of Defence (MoD).

The 23.5-metre-to-tip structures were earmarked for land at James Calvert Spence College – Acklington Road, in Amble.

Northumberland County Council’s energy and sustainability team had submitted the plan, which went out for consultation earlier this year. But now, the scheme has been pulled.

A county council spokeswoman said: “The application has been withdrawn because of objections from the Ministry of Defence. We are working with the MoD to try to find a solution that is right for the school and acceptable to them.”

The application had raised concerns in the community, with one objector branding it ‘ridiculous’.

Coun Scott Dickinson, who is chairman of governors at the school, said: “While the application had financial and educational benefits to the school the application was withdrawn by the county council’s support team for a variety of reasons and will be reviewed by them and governors before any further application is or is not submitted.”
