Site revealed for proposed new wind farm near Bute

A little more flesh has been added to the bones of a planned new wind farm on the south Cowal hills, opposite Rothesay Bay, after the company behind the scheme confirmed the location of the proposed development.

A map of the site was presented to visitors at a drop-in event organised by PNE Wind UK and held in Dunoon on October 2.

The location of the proposed development, being referred to by the firm as ‘Bachan Burn’, is to the east of the 419-metre Corlarach Hill, the subject of a wind farm application which was turned down by Argyll and Bute Council and Scottish ministers in 2009.

It is therefore less visible from Rothesay than either the Corlarach site or Black Craig, the site of a separate wind farm application which was also rejected by both the local council and Scottish ministers in 2009.

PNE Wind UK has yet to announce how many turbines it wants to erect on the Bachan Burn site, or how high each turbine will be, but on a visit to The Buteman after the drop-in, Katie Newlands from PNE Wind UK said that information would be contained in ‘scoping documents’ to be submitted within the next month.

“People were keen to know those details,” Ms Newlands acknowledged, “but they will be forthcoming shortly when the scoping document is ready to submit.

“In the meantime we have set up a project website which will be updated regularly, and we will be distributing a newsletter, because we want to be as open and transparent as possible.”

The company is also attempting to arrange a meeting with Bute Community Council to explain its proposals.
