Girvan wind farm heads for appeal

Ailsa Horizons has hit out at South Ayrshire Council over the way the local authority handled its application for a wind turbine at Girvan Mains Farm.

The social enterprise 
charity, which is based in Girvan, submitted its appeal over the council’s decision 
last week to the Scottish government.

The council rejected Ailsa Horizons’ application for the 67-metre turbine in June, citing the impact the turbine would have had on the landscape character and visual amenity of the area.

However, in its appeal document, Ailsa Horizons says it is aggrieved by the way the application was presented to the council’s Regulatory Panel and believe that the council’s planning officer exaggerated the visual impact of the development during his presentation. Ailsa Horizons is also keen to point out that its 
application received no objections during the consulation process and received twice as many letters from the public in support during the representation process.

The social enterprise group also believes the Regulatory Panel failed to recognise that economic and community benefits are material considerations. Ailsa Horizons had hoped this would promote economic development for Girvan and the wider area among numerous benefits but its fate now lies with the Scottish government.

A council spokesperson said: “As this matter is now subject to appeal, it would be inappropriate to make any comment.”
