BAD AXE – A Heritage Sustainable Energy official has outlined plans for a new wind farm the company wants to build on the east side of the county.

Rick Wilson said the proposed Big Turtle Wind Farm is a 20-megawatt project consisting of 10 wind energy turbines in Rubicon Township. He said Heritage Sustainable Energy has submitted a site plan review application to the Huron County Planning Commission.

During this week’s Huron County Board of Commissioners meeting, Wilson informed the board that the Michigan Public Service Commission has approved a contract for Heritage Sustainable Energy to sell power from the farm to DTE Energy.

Wilson said the Big Turtle Wind Farm is a unique project in that in excess of 50 percent of the input to the project – including equipment – will be coming from Michigan companies.

He said this will be the first project where 100 percent of the turbine towers will come from Ventower, a turbine tower fabricator from Monroe.

In addition, the project’s turbine supplier has agreed to purchase an additional $40 million worth of towers from Ventower that will be used in projects across the Midwest, Wilson told county officials.

Jeff Smith, director of the Huron County Building and Zoning Office, told officials the site plan review is expected to be conducted during the county planning commission’s next regular meeting, which is scheduled for Wednesday evening.
