Residents celebrate after windfarm plan is rejected

Campaigners are celebrating after plans for a windfarm were thrown out.

Energy firm Gamesa had applied to the Scottish Government to build a 117MW wind farm with 40 turbines at Glenouther Moor, south of Neilston, in East Renfrewshire.

But the plan was refused by Energy Minister Fergus Ewing following a public inquiry which said the design of the facility and the height of the turbines would have had a negative impact on the surrounding landscape.

Local resident Aileen Jackson, from Uplawmoor, said: “Had it been approved, the ring of steel around the South Side of Glasgow would have almost closed.

“It would have joined up Neilston and Middleton wind farms with Whitelee. The area is saturated with turbines.”

Mr Ewing said: “Scotland has enor-mous potential for renewable energy, that is delivering jobs and investment, and I am determined to ensure communities reap the benefit from renewable energy – but not at any cost and we will ensure a balanced approach in taking forward this policy.”
