Malouff gets 15 years in Jonestown wind energy fraud case

Charles Malouff never took the stand to defend himself last month, before a jury convicted him of falsifying documents to obtain a $2 million federal stimulus grant for a failed wind energy project in Jonestown. When he did speak during his sentencing on Tuesday, he cried about a fiery car crash he was involved in several years ago that killed a mother and her two children.

In the end, his emotional account of the accident and a brief history of his 29-year law enforcement career did not keep him out of prison. Travis County District Judge Karen Sage sentenced him to 15 years in prison, to run concurrently with a 2 1/2-year federal sentence he is currently serving for possession of firearms and destructive devices.
