Kelda takes down wind turbines after local campaign

Four wind turbines at a Yorkshire Water site are to be dismantled and not replaced in light of fierce local opposition.

The water company’s owner Kelda is taking down four 45-metre high turbines at Chelker Reservoir in the coming fortnight.

Kelda’s proposal for two larger turbines to replace the structures, which were erected in the 1990s, was rejected by Craven District Council last year. The company decided not to appeal.

Campaigner Catherine Leigh, of Parishioners Against Chelker Turbines, told the Wharfdale Observer it was “fantastic” news.

Kelda Group communications manager, Martyn Basierak, said: “The wind development at Chelker Reservoir, near Addingham, has provided clean energy for nearly 25 years to power Chelker and Lobwood pumping stations which provide water to Yorkshire Water customers in the Skipton and Addingham area.”
