Council refuses seat on turbine liaison committee

West Lincoln council will not have representation on Vineland Power’s community liaison committee.

Council received a request from the wind farm operator for a member of council to sit on the committee – which will facilitate communications between Vineland Power Inc. and the public – but did not make any nominations Monday.

Councillor John Glazier, who chaired Monday’s administration/finance/fire meeting in the absence of Coun. Eric Leith, said he was informed that Leith was interested in filling the position, but that he was not making a nomination.

“He was interested an I wanted that to be known,” Glazier said.

One member of council was not impressed to hear that, seeing as the township has declared itself “not a willing host” to industrial wind turbines.

“We’ve been very clear that we don’t want to be a part of this,” said Coun. Sue Ellen Merritt, referring to council’s decision to turn down control of a community vibrancy fund pitched by wind turbine proponent Niagara Region Wind Corp., which has an application before the province for a 230 megawatt wind farm mainly in West Lincoln.

“I am very surprised that a council member would want to sit there.”

A motion to only receive the request for information purposed was unanimously supported by council.
