Bruce County is an Unwilling Host

Bruce County council is formally taking a stand against wind turbines.

County council voted unanimously to declare itself an unwilling host to wind turbines, much to the delight of the members of the Bruce Peninsula Wind Turbine Action Group who had filled the gallery.

Spokesperson George Heigenhauser says this sends a message to Premier Kathleen Wynne that municipalities intend on holding her to her pledge that wind turbines would not be forced on communities that do not want them.

Saugeen Shores Mayor Mike Smith says the lack of municipal input into wind energy projects remains a frustrating topic and the declaration sends a message to Queen’s Park that they will not accept wind turbines in their communities until local councils have their voice restored.

Smith says it’s important for county council to stand in support of its eight lower-tier municipalities, who have all previously passed resolutions declaring themselves unwilling hosts to wind turbines.

Bruce County council also voted to remove all references to wind energy from its Official Plan during the next review in 2015.
