Wind lobby’s claims aside, many know turbines’ curse

Cape Cod Times | September 19, 2013 | www.capecodonline.com

The wind industry’s lobby (“Benefits of wind power outweigh perceived risks,” Letters, Sept. 5) does an excellent job of ignoring documented facts about the negative health impacts of wind turbines near residential areas, as well as falsely claiming opponents do not understand the benefits of wind power.

Most of those involved in Wind Wise Massachusetts are environmentalists, in favor of green energy. What we strongly oppose are poorly sited wind turbines that affect health, cause real estate values to plummet and pose financial risks to towns.

Numerous peer-reviewed research studies clearly point to sleep disruption, impaired mental health and decreased quality of life for those living within a mile of wind turbines. But there is not one peer-reviewed study that shows that wind turbines do not cause these health effects.

It is easy for a wind lobbyist sitting in Washington, D.C., representing companies that profit from selling wind turbines to wax eloquent about how the turbines are not a problem. Maybe he should visit the Cape and talk to homeowners who have filed hundreds of complaints with health departments or talk to parents whose children are having difficulty concentrating in school because the turbines are keeping them awake at night.
