Alton approves solar and wind power ordinance

Alton is setting the stage to bring more solar and wind power to the city. A text amendment to the zoning ordinance to regulate the usage and placement of solar panels and wind turbines within the city was recently approved. The plan is to lay down some ground rules for private citizens and businesses to install the equipment.

Matt Asselmeier Alton Deputy Director of Community Development and Housing says while the rules allow for a little more leeway on commercial buildings, residential areas must keep the solar panels flat along the angle of the roof line.

He says part of the ordinance would involve getting approval of your neighbors before placing the solar panels or windmills. The final say, however, still lies with the full city council which would consider any special use permits.
