Power Siting Board to consider wind rehearing applications

COLUMBUS – The Buckeye Wind II project will be discussed during the Sept. 30 Ohio Power Siting Board (OPSB) meeting.

OPSB spokesperson Matt Butler said the board will address the merits of timely-filed applications for rehearing by the Champaign County Commission, the townships of Goshen, Union and Urbana, and citizens group Union Neighbors United (UNU).

During its May 28 meeting, the board approved a certificate allowing for the construction of this second phase of the Buckeye Wind farm. Combined with the first phase, more than 100 wind turbines are proposed to be constructed in eastern Champaign County.

Following the board’s decision, the county, the city of Urbana and UNU filed applications for rehearings. Administrative Law Judge Mandy W. Chiles granted the county and UNU’s applications in July for the purpose of giving the board more time to consider issues presented in the applications.

The city’s application was not mentioned in the entry granting these applications. Project applicant Champaign Wind LLC in July filed a motion to strike against the city, arguing that the city’s application missed the deadline to file for rehearing.

Butler said the board will address the city of Urbana’s application for rehearing.

An amendment to the first phase of the project is pending before the OPSB. Six entities have intervened the amendment.
