Zoners to consider extension for Kingman wind farm

KINGMAN – The slump in the economy has put the expansion of a wind turbine project outside of Kingman on a temporary hold.

Western Wind Energy will ask the Mohave County Planning and Zoning Commission for a four-year extension of time on a rezone for the second phase of its wind farm in the foothills near the Nucor steel plant.

According to information provided to the commission, Western Wind Energy is still negotiating an agreement to sell the energy generated by the wind farm.

The five wind turbines from the first phase of the project, which can be seen by motorists driving down El Trovatore Hill on Andy Devine Avenue, produce power for UniSource Energy Services.

It cost Western Wind approximately $24 million to install the first half of the wind farm. It is unknown how much it will cost to install the next phase of the wind farm.

The commission will also consider:

• A rezone for a commercial greenhouse in the Cedar Hill Ranches area. Cedar Hill Ranches is near the intersection U.S. 93 and Interstate 40 east of Kingman.

• A rezone for a hay and feed store and future recycling facility near Santa Claus Acres, north of Mineral Park Mine Road.

• A zoning use permit for a church at the corner of Second Avenue and Third Street in Yucca.

The commission meets at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the County Administration Building, 700 W. Beale St.
