Dutch set 4.4GW offshore wind goal

The Netherlands has set out plans for a big hike in offshore wind capacity, as part of a broad-based consensus on energy that sets less ambitious overall renewables targets but formulates firm goals for wind power.

Under the “energy accord” finalised between the Dutch government, trade unions, employers and environmental groups on Friday, the country among other measures sets a target to reach 6GW of onshore wind and 4.4GW of offshore wind capacity by 2023.

That is up from about 1GW in offshore wind farms that either already exist or are in the pipeline, the deal states. The Netherlands currently has 2.5GW in total wind power capacity – onshore and offshore combined – Greenpeace said.

But the agreement also pushes back a target to meet 16% of the northern European country’s energy needs with renewables
