Peru board must respect residents

Berkshire Eagle | 09/02/2013 | www.berkshireeagle.com

I’m writing to you after reading the recent coverage about open meeting law violations in Pittsfield. There has been debate about industrial wind development in Peru which has been very controversial. Recently, our town overwhelmingly voted down a bylaw amendment which would have allowed a developer to build a wind farm in our town.

Since then a larger than usual number of people have been interested in attending select board meetings, which has resulted in an overflow of people standing outside the room where the board has its weekly meetings. Some people are unable to hear the discussions going on among the townspeople and Selectmen. The board has been repeatedly asked to move its meetings to a more accommodating area, but refuses to comply with the wishes of the people making the request.

I’m not totally clear on what constitutes an open meeting law violation, but think our board should show more courtesy and respect to the taxpayers of our town.
