North East to consider proposed wind ordinance

By VALERIE MYERS, Erie Times-News | September 2, 2013 | www.goerie.com

NORTH EAST – A proposed ordinance regulating the placement of commercial wind turbines is generating debate in North East Township.

Opponents say that setbacks proposed in the ordinance won’t protect neighboring homes from turbine noise, shadows and ice throw.

Developers say that the setbacks are similar to those in effect in other parts of the state, where turbines have not disturbed neighbors or neighboring property values.

Township supervisors will formally present the ordinance for comment during a public hearing on Sept. 10.

Texas-based Pioneer Green Energy plans to build a small commercial wind farm in southern North East Township.
