Turtles one, turbines zero

The Ostrander Decision The slowest doesn’t always finish last. At least that was one lesson learned in July 2013 when the Environmental Review Tribunal (“Tribunal”) delivered an unprecedented decision in Alliance to Protect Prince Edward County v. Director, Ministry of the Environment.[1] The Tribunal revoked the decision of the Director of the Ministry of Environment (“MOE”) that had originally granted a Renewable Energy Approval (“REA”) for a wind turbine project. Why?  Turtles. Two groups appealed the Director’s decision to originally grant . . . Complete story »

‘Intimidated’ farmers back out of deals

A major player in the midlands wind energy project are allowing landowners to back out of option contracts if they prove they were intimidated. Mainstream spokesperson Diarmuid Twomey says some landowners have already pulled out elsewhere. “I can categorically say they were intimidated, in the schoolyard, the churchyard. We are not going to hold someone against their will if they are under duress,” he told the Leinster Express. The company is signing deals in Laois, with about 40 landowners signed . . . Fury at windfarm beautyspot plan

A stunning location near where the fantasy drama Game of Thrones was filmed could soon be spoiled by a windfarm, campaigners in Northern Ireland said. Remote and beautiful Binevenagh Mountain overlooks the North Coast. A proposal to site 21 wind turbines on it has caused fury among some local business owners. A campaign has been launched to halt the proposed development close to Castlerock. Games of Thrones was shot on the nearby Blue Flag Downhill beach. A spokesman for the . . . Complete story »

PETOSKEY – The Emmet County Planning Commission soon will be considering changes to the county’s wind energy systems ordinance that would increase wind turbines’ allowable noise levels in many locations. Planning commissioners will meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 3, at the county building in downtown Petoskey. Opportunities for public input on the proposed changes will be available at the meeting, county planning director Tammy Doernenburg said. Any position that the planning commission takes on the changes would serve as an . . . Complete story »

NASA wind farm still blowing in wind

NASA administrators recently hosted a public forum to inform people about the possible installation of 25 wind turbines at the Plum Brook Station. Administrators first introduced the concept in 2010. Per federal laws, the space agency needs to seek out alternative, energy-efficient methods of power production. Wind turbines of up to 500 feet high would satisfy this quota. NASA’s wind farm project manager Bryan Coates answered the Register’s questions about the proposal: Q: Will the wind farm happen? BC: At . . . Complete story »

In an open letter to the Scottish Government, the Astronomer Royal for Scotland, the John Muir Trust and the Scottish Wild Land Group warn about the serious risks to the dark skies that made the park possible. They want a change in planning policy . . . Complete story »

Turbine project could move to Supreme Court

A legal dispute over a proposed wind farm in Champaign County could be on its way to the Ohio Supreme Court, after members of the Ohio Power Siting Board rejected a request to reconsider their initial decision that allowed the project to move forward. The board’s decision Monday means the state’s highest court is the last available option for opponents of the second phase of the Buckeye Wind Project. Those opponents have raised concerns ranging from the noise the wind . . . Complete story »

Do wind watts really work? Analysis of LEEDCO Icebreaker Project

The Lake Erie Energy Development Corporation (LEEDCO) is proposing a trial project named Icebreaker, which entails placing 6 Siemens 3.0 MW direct drive wind turbines offshore of Cleveland, OH, in Lake Erie. Please refer to this Cleveland Plain Dealer article on the subject, and also this WKSU report.
