Renewable Choice Energy announces partnership with City of Boston

Renewable Choice Energy (http://www.renewablechoice.com) announced today that the City of Boston has purchased green power from the Boulder-based firm to help offset its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The City purchased 28,000 wind-generated renewable energy credits (RECs) from Renewable Choice for fiscal year 2013, 33% more than were purchased in the prior year. The RECs will be used to offset approximately 18% of the City’s electricity use.

The purchase of green power is only one of the City’s progressive energy and GHG reduction initiatives, which include a new municipal energy management system and the completion of 23 energy efficiency projects this past fiscal year. The City is on target to meet Mayor Thomas M. Menino’s stated GHG reduction goals of 25% by 2020 and 80% by 2050. In addition, the energy efficiency measures will save the City about $400,000 in energy costs.

“The City of Boston is committed to leading by example to reduce greenhouse gas emissions,” Mayor Menino said. “Purchasing renewable energy credits is one of our many strategies to reduce the City’s carbon footprint.”

RECs are the way that green power is tracked and traded in North America and are used by thousands of U.S. and Canadian organizations, including the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, to decrease environmental impact. The RECs purchased by the City are sourced from 100% U.S. wind power facilities and are certified by Green-e® Energy, the nation’s leading certification program for renewable energy. The City has been purchasing green power in the form of RECs for the past seven years.

“We are very excited to be working with the City of Boston,” said John Powers, VP of Business Development for Renewable Choice. “As a leader among major urban centers, the City has set progressive and commendable goals for reducing its energy consumption and environmental impact, and we are honored to be a part of its success.”
