Planners reject turbine on edge of Dartmoor

Britain’s oldest conservation body has praised the rejection of a wind turbine application on the edge of Dartmoor National Park.

The 67-metre turbine was to be sited close to Spitlar House Farm in South Tawton but was turned down for its visual impact on the surrounding landscape.

The turbine was strongly opposed by multiple groups including the Open Spaces Society.

Kate Ashbrook, general secretary, said: “We are delighted at this outcome.

“We objected because of the damaging effect the monstrous structure and its associated paraphernalia would have on this sensitive landscape, close to the Dartmoor National Park. They would have had an adverse effect on people’s enjoyment of the area and impinged on the views from public rights of way, including the Tarka Trail and Two Moors Way long-distance routes.”

The application by Murex Energy Ltd was rejected by West Devon District Council.

The council’s reasons included “the significant visual impact upon Dartmoor National Park.”
