Thorington wind turbine proposal attracts opposition

A proposal for a 300ft (90m) tall wind turbine in a Suffolk village has attracted a dozen objections.

Stratus Environmental of Leeds wants to build the wind-powered generator at Thorington near Halesworth.

The objectors say it is similar to the two turbines at nearby Kessingland where villagers have complained about the noise.

Suffolk Coastal District Council’s planning officers have yet to recommend whether it should get approval.

The erection of the Kessingland turbines, which began turning in 2011, has led to hundreds of complaints from neighbours who claim the noise from the blades is too great in certain wind conditions.

Objectors to the new proposal for Park Farm have told the council they do not want it.

‘Noisy and ugly’

Alison Barker, who lives in Thorington, said: “Look at the unhappy people in Kessingland and what it has done to their community.”

Janet Easton of Yoxford said: “These turbines are extremely noisy and ugly and I would never buy a property near one.

“Property prices in the area would be reduced.”

David Smith, of Wenhaston, said: “Individual wind turbines built purely for personal financial gain are not the answer to our energy requirement.”

Stratus were not available to comment on the objections, while statutory bodies have yet to respond as part of the consultation process.

The planning application is due to be considered by councillors later this year, but no date has been set yet.
