Akron-Westfield turbine may be sold and removed

Although the final details aren’t worked out yet, the Akron-Westfield School Board decided what to do with the school district’s wind turbine at their Aug. 12 meeting.

After another closed session, Board Member Nick Schoenfelder made a motion to sell the wind turbine. Board Member Josh Martinsen seconded it, and the vote was unanimous, 6-0 with Board President Jim Black absent.

The prospective buyer is Tenderland Renewables of Paso Robles, Calif. Their initial proposal, dated June 1, 2012, was to purchase the wind turbine, tear it down and remove it from its current site. In general terms, Tenderland Renewables’ original proposal included paying A-W a cash payment up front at the time a mutually-acceptable purchase and sale agreement is reached. The company would also pay for disassembling the turbine and transporting it off its current site. Then they would rehabilitate the turbine and tower and sell it. The company would pay A-W an additional fee, which would be a portion of the net profit from the sale if there was any.

According to Business Manager Jodi Ryan, the school board officials, including attorneys, will now work on finalizing a sales agreement; and if and when it’s completed, then go through the process of disposing of this piece of school property.

School board members had also considered a proposal to either sell or lease the wind turbine to another entity for the purpose of the turbine being used as a wind energy education lab but a satisfactory agreement could not be reached, she said.
