School collects, analyzes wind energy data

The Tribune-Democrat | August 17, 2013 | tribune-democrat.com

LORETTO – St. Francis University is accepting applications for its Renewable Energy Center’s anemometer loan program.

The center recently purchased state of the art equipment to assist landowners with wind energy analysis.

Meteorological towers collect data such as wind speed, wind direction and general site conditions. SODAR, a remote sensing piece of equipment, measures wind speed, wind shear and wind direction.

The data collected is essential for utility and community scale wind development, the center said.

After an application is received, Renewable Energy Center staff will conduct a preliminary review of the site to determine if a more detailed study is feasible.

The center also will work with the landowner to complete basic community, environmental and transmission analyses prior to the erection of a tower.

The center can assist landowners and tower developers with finding funding opportunities.

Over the past six years, the center has conducted wind assessments at 12 sites in seven Pennsylvania counties.

Development of the Patton Wind Farm started with data collection from the anemometer loan program.

Applying to the program is free. Applications and details can be downloaded at francis.edu/renewable-wind-energy-services/.
