Peace offering in long-running turbine battle

An end to the long-running Palgrave wind turbine saga could be on the horizon.

Palgrave and District Community Council (PDCC), which installed the turbine in 2011 on the community centre field in a way that did not fit the planning permission, has asked the working party it formed to resolve the issue to work on a bid to move the turbine.

A number of residents are unhappy with the structure off Upper Rose Lane, which they claim is noisy, visually intrusive, and ‘flickers’.

But working party chairman David Burn warned that there are a lot of obstacles on the path to submitting a bid to move the turbine – a step which would appease the majority of protesters.

These include the fact that the 24-metre turbine must be 500 metres or less from the centre,cannot be near overhead power lines, and must be 250 metres from homes. At present, it is 110 metres away.

The PDCC, reliant on income generated by the turbine, is due to hear next month from Mid Suffolk District Council if it can keep the turbine where it is . But this won’t hit a future move, Mr Burn said, as the PDCC is first making the current turbine legal. Also due for a decision next month, but from Suffolk County Council, is Palgrave resident Neil Weston. He applied to the council to turn the fields into a village green – a move he believes would require the turbine’s removal.
