Winder turbine plans shelved

Plans for a highly-controversial wind turbine, which attracted almost 1,000 letters of objection, have been withdrawn.

Copeland Council has confirmed that planning permission is no longer being sought for a 70m-high single turbine proposed for farmland in Winder, near Frizington.

The plans caused an uproar locally when they were first revealed in June.

Objections came from all four parish and town councils that surround the site – Lamplugh, Arlecdon and Frizington, Ennerdale and Kinniside, and Cleator Moor – and a petition launched by a local protest group attracted overwhelming support.

Speaking on behalf of the protestors, Richard Wilson, of Winder Brow, said: “We don’t see this as a victory as we do respect the applicant’s right to earn a living and we do recognise the need for us all to reduce our carbon footprint.

“However, we feel this decision supports our view that this location is unsuitable for a commercial wind turbine installation being in such a prominent site in close proximity to the natural beauty of the Lake District.

“Members of our group are now retiring to await further developments, but have not ruled out repeating the campaign should a revised proposal be submitted.”

Agents NEO-Environmental had said that the applicant intended to offer a one-off sum of £50,000 to local parishes to compensate for the disruption and negative impacts.
