More wind turbines on the horizon

OSBORN – First Wind has built a 19-turbine wind farm in Hancock County and recently got state approval to build a new 17-turbine facility nearby.

Now the Boston-based wind energy company wants to build a third local wind farm that would be bigger than either of those projects.

The proposed new facility, known as Weaver Wind, would be located in the towns of Eastbrook and Osborn. It would consist of thirty 3.3-megawatt turbines, giving Weaver Wind a total generating capacity of 99 megawatts.

By comparison, First Wind’s existing local wind farm – Bull Hill, in Township 16 – has nineteen 1.8-megatwatt turbines.

A second facility, known as Hancock Wind, recently received approval from the Maine Department of Environmental Protection but has not yet been built.
