We received news Saturday that Eolian’s application for meteorological towers in Brighton, Newark and Ferdinand, all in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom, had been approved by the Public Service Board. As luck would have it, I also read the piece to all the issues industrial wind has either created or discovered as projects were approved. Your balanced observations, particularly regarding the building of the already wind-saturated Northeast Kingdom, hit home.
Our communities’ economics are tourist driven, the mountains and wilderness the destination of travelers from all over the world. To again blast the tops off our ridgelines, disrupting our wildlife, migrating birds and rare ecosystems, for another 30 500-foot-tall turbines is ludicrous. Furthermore, the grid in this far northeast corner of the state is the same one already overtaxed, resulting in curtailment of other wind projects. The PSB continues to approve projects with no value for the public good, ultimately creating more problems and costing taxpayers and ratepayers higher costs.
As fall creeps up on us, take a ride to visit us. You will pass by the turbines already scarring the mountains in Lowell and Sheffield, and as you travel on to the beautiful scenic views of Burke, Newark, Westmore and Brighton, join us in our battle to stop any further siting of industrial wind turbines in the Northeast Kingdom. Stop at the welcome center in Island Pond and buy a bumper sticker – SOS, Save Our Senecas and visit the Silvio Conte Center in the Nulhegan basin. And as you drive east on Route 105 look to the mountains on your right, for that may be the last time you see that vista without turbines.
