Wind farm would ‘open flood gates’

A parish councillor has spoken her fears over how a controversial wind turbine development would ‘open the flood gates’ to more of its kind if it is approved by the Government.

Christine Lee, a Burton Agnes Parish Councillor, commented on the six-turbine scheme planned for Thornholme Fields near Burton Agnes, after a public inquiry into the development closed last Tuesday.

She said: “All the parish councils round here objected to it. If approved by Eric Pickles it will open the flood gates for more wind turbines in the Wolds. It will mean that there is going to be about 60 turbines south of Bridlington.

“They have impact on tourism and impact and the small communities.”

Paul Griffiths, Government planning inspector, visited the site to consider the surrounding landscape after hearing evidence at the inquiry from East Riding of Yorkshire Council, which refused permission for the development, and applicants Wind Prospects Development Ltd.

He is now compiling a report on the proposal which will be submitted to Eric Pickles, secretary of state for communities and local government, who will make the final decision.

Burton Agnes Parish Council will send a letter calling for Mr Pickles to listen to the objections of local opposition.

Boynton and Carnaby Parish councils also objected to the proposal.

A spokesperson for Wind Prospects Development Ltd, said: “The Thornholme Field wind farm proposal is a well designed and appropriately sited wind farm. Wind energy is an important part of the renewable technology energy mix and is helping to protect future generations from climate change. We look forward to the hearing the outcome of the public inquiry before the end of this year.”
