LENEXA, Kan. – A wind turbine proposal in Lenexa has been met with opposition.

Suburban Lawn and Garden, near K-7 and Prairie Star, wants to build one turbine to power its greenhouses and store in western Lenexa.

The announcement that the turbine could be built a block from several homes has some homeowners worried it will be noisy and impact their property values.

Monday night, the city of Lenexa will host a public meeting to discuss options for the turbine.

Matt Stueck, Vice President of Suburban Lawn and Garden, said they have already changed their proposal to help appease the neighbors.

The proposal would move the turbine 450 feet east of the original location. It would also shorten the turbine 15 feet, from 120 to 105 feet.

He also says the turbine will be as quiet as a conversation between two people.

“We’re looking for the right size and the right scale to go with our 25-acre plant nursery and would also be the least offensive to the neighbors,” he said. “We want something beautiful which can also supply our electrical needs.”

Corbett Smith, a homeowner just a block from the proposed turbine site, said she likes the idea of clean energy, but is concerned about the noise it would create as she and her kids play outside.

“If they could maybe put it closer to K-7, I don’t think any of us would have a problem with it,” she said.

Monday’s meeting is at 7 p.m. at Lenexa City Hall.
