Plea to ban windfarms near homes is rejected

Windfarms will continue to be built near homes after ministers ruled out creating “buffer zones”, it emerged last night.

Politicians last month promised guidance to effectively end the spread of the turbines, which have been blamed for blighting landscapes.

But a new planning document from the Local Government department says the distance of a windfarm from housing should not “necessarily determine” whether a proposal is unacceptable.

At least eight councils want to stop large turbines being built up to 1.2 miles from houses.

Glyn Davies, MP for Montgomeryshire, said it was wrong to “make it more difficult for people trying to stop wind turbines destroying their lives”.

Maf Smith, of RenewableUK, said the Government agreed with the industry that each site “needs to be looked at on its merits”.

The Energy and Climate Change department said applications will only be accepted “where the impacts are, or can be made, acceptable”.
