‘Reduce wind farm subsidies now’ say Belford residents

The Middleton Burn Action Group (MBAG), which opposes wind developments in the Belford area, is urging residents to back the ‘Reduce wind subsidies NOW’ campaign.

With wind developer Energiekontor UK Ltd having submitted a planning application to Northumberland County Council for up to nine turbines at Belford Burn earlier this month, MBAG is asking those with an opinion to get involved.

The campaign, which is being coordinated by Daventry MP Chris Heaton-Harris, warns that the government’s current policy is to blame for rising energy bills, and says that unless subsidies are changed, energy bills could rise by £144 by 2020.

MBAG committee member Georgie Leyland said: “Things are changing and we must all do what we can to help Chris Heaton-Harris MP to continue his sterling work by responding to this very worthwhile campaign.

“We need to make a loud noise now, in all capacities.”

Mr Heaton-Harris is also appealing directly to north Northumberland residents to back the campaign.

He said: “Reducing the subsidies that are paid to Wind Farm Developers will be of great benefit to all, however, even though we have had a great response, Berwick-upon-Tweed is falling a little behind in the fight and it has now become more urgent that as a resident of this area you support this campaign and push your local view to the forefront of the discussion.”

He added: “This is really important as the Rt. Hon Michael Fallon MP, the energy minister and the department of energy and climate (DECC) actually need to see just how much Berwick-upon-Tweed is against these unwanted developments.”
