Wind turbine districts possible in Madison

TOWN OF MADISON – At a special workshop held on Wednesday, July 17, the Madison Town Board made the decision to establish two special districts for wind turbines in the township.

“We have decided the best way to serve our town is to have districts that allow wind turbines and areas that do not allow them. The board feels this should be a way to protect the densely populated portions of the town but also provide an opportunity for the sparsely populated,” said Supervisor Ron Bono after the workshop.

According to Bono, District A would be from Center, Stone and Quarterline roads to the eastern town line and District B would be from Stratford, Elm and Canal roads to the west. If approved, the law would include a 450-foot height restriction and setbacks of 2 ½ times the height. No industrial windmills will be allowed in areas other than the new districts.

“We have had many meetings, workshops, surveys, and public hearings. The input seems to be that our residents want to encourage wind development but in appropriate locations,” he added.

A draft of the new law is currently being prepared and Bono said the goal is to have it completed by Aug. 1. It would then be submitted to Madison County officials for approval before another public hearing can be scheduled– hopefully for mid-August. After the public hearing the final document would need to be created and approved before it becomes law. Bono added that, if major changes are made after the public hearing, another hearing would be required before the final steps can be taken.
