Wind farm threatened heritage

Credit:  Derbyshire Times | 24 July 2013 | www.derbyshiretimes.co.uk ~~

The National Trust’s Hardwick Hall claims it has been saved from the blight of a wind farm eyesore after a planning application to erect six turbines near Palterton has been rejected by Bolsover District Council’s planning committee.

Roseland Community Windfarm LLP had applied to construct six, 126.5m high wind turbines, an anemometer mast, control building and substation on land around Roseland Wood, Scarcliffe.

Hardwick Hall manager Denise Edwards said: “The National Trust supports the development of renewable energy sources. However, we believe the impact on communities and natural or historic landscapes should be very carefully considered.”

Objectors raised concerns over potential damaging effects on heritage assets and conservation areas, health problems and questioned proposed grants. Palterton and Community Action Group and others raised similar concerns.

The applicants stated the development would create £750,000 profit a year which would be re-invested and the scheme had been reduced to mitigate effects. But councillors rejected the application at a meeting on July 17 by a majority on the grounds it would be detrimental to heritage assets in the region and this outweighed financial benefits.
