Wal-Mart wind turbine operational after almost a year

RED BLUFF, Calif. – It took just under one year, but the wind turbine at the Wal-Mart distribution center in Red Bluff is up and running.

The 2.2 megawatt turbine was unveiled last August and has stood motionless through the winter until about a month ago.

The issue keeping it stationary was the pending approval from PG&E so they could generate power while staying connected to the grid.

Without some special equipment, the turbine ran the risk of damaging equipment in the power grid.

Now, although the turbine is now operational, that does not mean it will be moving all the time. The blades will only turn in a wind of four miles per hour or more.
