Ontario OKs 270MW by Samsung

Ontario officials have granted a renewable energy approval (REA) for the 270MW K2 wind project proposed near the southeastern shore of Lake Huron.

Partners Samsung Renewable Energy, Pattern Energy and Capital Power plan to build 140 Siemens SWT 2.3MW turbines (pictured). Several machines will be de-rated to operate between 1.824MW and 2.3MW.

Any resident of Ontario may require a hearing by the Environmental Review Tribunal within 15 days.

A provincial court in May ruled against landowners fighting the wind farm, saying it was premature to ask for an injunction until an REA is granted and any ERT appeal is dealt with. The court action was stayed until the regulatory process is complete.

In the meantime, the Ontario Energy Board is considering an application for transmission interconnection facilities.

The proponents plan to build a 34.5/230kV transformer station that will step up half of the collector lines. Another substation next to Hydro One’s 500kV Ashfield switching station will step up the other half of the 34.5kV lines and the 230kV transmission line to 500kV. A five-kilometer 230kV underground transmission line will link the two stations.

The proponents aim to start building access roads, foundations and substations later this year. , Turbine construction is slated to begin in the second quarter of 2014 and K2 is expected to be in commercial operation in the first half of 2015.
