Windfarm sleepover proves inconclusive

Windy weather overnight has meant a sleepover near the Waterloo windfarm in South Australia’s Mid North has proven inconclusive.

Three State MPs, Labor’s Russell Wortley, the Greens Mark Parnell and Liberal David Ridgway spent the night in an abandoned house to experience the noise of a wind farm.

They are all a part of the South Australian Windfarm Parliamentary Select Committee investigating the economic, social and health effects of wind-driven power stations.

The previous occupier of the house where they stayed moved out saying it was affecting his health.

Chairman of the committee David Ridgway says a single night in the house meant it was too hard to come to a conclusion about noise from the turbines.

“It was very windy [and] a fair bit of rain last night and I couldn’t really hear any distinctive noise that I could say was coming from the wind farm.

“At times we thought we could hear something when we were standing outside and I just spent the last hour or so lying in bed listening hard, but the wind is in the wrong direction so it’s blowing the wind away from us.”
