Growing concern over North Newton wind turbine project

Concern is growing over a proposed 77-metre wind turbine scheme, at Impen’s Farm, near North Newton.

As reported, Cleanearth Energy is behind the project, and comments can be made to Sedgemoor District Council until July 17.

Sarah Allen, who lives in North Newton, said: “Many villagers, not only from North Newton, but also from the surrounding area, are concerned about the impact that this huge turbine (three times the height of the electricity pylons standing in front) will have on both the landscape and wildlife in the area.

“The very nature of the landscape would allow the proposed turbine to be visible from miles around, causing it to become a central focus on what is an area of natural beauty.

“The effect it would have on bats in the area is also of concern.

“Some species are know to fly extremely high – notably noctule, common pipistrelle and nathusius pipistrelle and there is evidence to show the number of noctule bats in Sedgemoor is greater than any other recorded area in Somerset.”

Cleanearth said in a planning statement: “The location has been chosen to give the best possible clearance distance to local residential properties, while following guidance from bodies such as Natural England and Sedgemoor Council for the protection of vulnerable species (such as bats).”
