Activists to urge study of wind turbine impacts around state

Boston – Proponents of statewide surveillance and testing for the adverse health impacts of wind turbines plan to testify Tuesday at a legislative hearing on bills proposed by lawmakers from Cape Cod and areas west of Route 128.
According to Wind Wise Massachusetts, an alliance of organizations concerned about the impacts of poorly sited wind turbines, the bills before the Public Health Committee would require the development of materials and resources to detect signs and symptoms of adverse health impacts for clinical providers and school health personnel, as well as testing for impacts such as sleep disorders, child night terrors and panic attacks.
“There are hundreds of families in 21 communities in the Commonwealth that are suffering physically and financially from wind turbines located near their homes,” Lilli-Ann Green, a spokesperson for Wind Wise Massachusetts, said in a statement released ahead of Tuesday’s hearing. “Their home values have plummeted and town public health boards have been inundated with complaints about the adverse health impacts from the turbines.”
Wind power projects have gained momentum across Massachusetts in recent years as residents and businesses seek turn to renewable energy. The bills are on the Public Health Committee’s docket for a 9:30 a.m. hearing.
