Dumfries and Galloway turbine fund group plans shelved

BBC News | 3 July 2013 | www.bbc.co.uk

Plans to create a new grant body to share out funds generated by wind farms in Dumfries and Galloway have been shelved.

The council had agreed to split the money received from developers.

Half of it would have gone to communities directly affected by the turbines with the rest being pooled to support projects across the region.

However, accountability concerns about a group to administer the region-wide fund have seen the idea put on hold.

Members of Dumfries and Galloway Council’s planning committee have called for a report on other options.

Ian Carruthers, who chairs the committee, said there had been “little support” for the action group as it had been proposed.

“There will be a lot of debate over this, there is a lot of controversy – there are a lot of heated thoughts when it comes to this and a lot of emotions behind it,” he said.

“Hopefully within two or three months we will have this bottomed out and we will have something in place which is palatable to everybody across Dumfries and Galloway – if we can reach that point.”
