Protest planned outside wind farm exhibition

Campaigners will stage a protest outside an exhibition tonight (Tuesday) showcasing plans for a new wind farm near Churchover.

ASWAR (Against Subsidised Windfarms Around Rugby) will hold the rally outside Churchover Village Hall at 7.30pm.

The group is protesting against plans for renewable energy company RES to put four wind turbines on land to the west of the A5 to the north of Churchover.

Lorne Smith from ASWAR said: “The last energy minister, John Hayes, said there are enough wind turbines built or have been given planning permission already to meet the EU directive on renewable energy, seven years in advance of the target year 2020.

“The economic scam of wind turbines increases your electricity bills, undermines the competitiveness of British industry, and drives jobs off-shore and ordinary people into fuel poverty.”

Representatives from Hertfordshire-based RES said Swift Wind Farm could generate eight megawatts of electricity, meeting the average needs of 6,400 homes.

Project manager Dan Patterson said: “We believe that the proposals will make a valuable contribution to renewable energy targets.”
