Orland deadlocks on wind power proposal

The 42 voters who attended the annual Town Meeting on June 12 were evenly split about supporting a proposed three-turbine wind energy project.

The nonbinding straw vote failed to pass after ending in a 21-21 tie.

Eolian Renewable Energy of Portsmouth, N.H., wants to construct three 9-megawatt turbines on White’s Mountain and Dodge Hill. Eolian representatives requested the straw vote to gauge community support prior to officially applying for local and state permits.

The straw vote was the only item not approved in the 22-article town warrant. Residents approved the $617,773 municipal budget, which is $46,888 less than this year’s.

In the municipal elections held June 12, Selectman Lester Stackpole was re-elected. He received 98 votes. Brenda Leavitt finished second with 95 and Dana Doane received 49.

In other results, Rhonda Clements won a three-year term as an assessor, Jay Clement and Peter Robshaw earned four-year terms to the Fish Committee, Thomas Taylor-Lash won re-election to the Regional School Unit 25 (RSU 25) School Committee and Robert Wardwell earned another three-year term as road commissioner.
