Wind turbine flickering affecting Dekker Road homeowner

SUMMERSIDE – A Dekker Road resident isn’t happy with what is happening at his home because of the wind turbines at the Summerside wind farm.

For about an hour in the evening, Emmet Curley said his home is unlivable because of flickering caused by two of the four wind turbines at the city’s wind farm.

“It’s 50 minutes from the time it starts until the time it stops,” Curley said. “It all depends on the direction of the wind or if it’s a cloudy night I don’t get it but on a clear night and the wind is northwest or west, east, I get pounded.

“The blades cast a seven-foot shadow across my house – each blade. I’m lined up with two (turbines) so I’ve got six blades that’s pounding me. The city has to curb it to make life bearable for the people who have no control over it.”

Greg Gaudet, director of municipal works, said the city is following the operating guidelines for the wind farm and that any flickering is well with environmental regulations.

“That was an issue we had dealt with for quite a while,” Gaudet said. “The city’s operating the turbines as per the Environmental Assessment and Operating Permit.”

He said an environmental assessment was done and the shadow flicker studied.
