Plans ‘figleaf for wind farm expansion’

Yorkshire Post | June 06, 2013 | www.yorkshirepost.co.uk

Three parish councils are objecting to plans to expand a wind farm in an area “which cannot withstand any more industrialisation.”

The proposals for a wind measuring mast on land east of North Pasture Farm, Out Gates, Gembling, in East Yorkshire, has incensed residents who have been told it is a precursor to an expansion of the Lissett wind farm.

Five more massive turbines could be erected close to the 12 that are already there, “further impacting on the quality of life for residents.”

Lissett and Ulrome parish council is demanding a “robust challenge” to Government over the proliferation of turbines in the East Riding.

The county has had the most planning applications for large onshore wind developments in the whole of England over the past decade.

Its chairman Gloria Daly said the villages were coming under pressure not only from turbines but other “green” technologies.

The converter station for a carbon capture scheme in the North Sea will take up 25 hectares at Barmston, while the cable from the Dogger Bank offshore wind farm will land at Ulrome.

She said: “The village is half and half – some people say they are terrible, others say they are not bothered. We are not saying not in our own backyard – we are saying enough in our own backyard, you’ve given us enough.”

Margaret Cockbill, chairman of the East Yorkshire branch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England, said the spread of turbines was “getting out of hand.”

“Low-lying landscape is just as important as areas of outstanding natural beauty. Holderness, where you have all these open skies and beautiful sunsets, all that will be lost.”

However the application is being recommended for approval at a meeting at County Hall, Beverley, on Monday. A report states: “Granting permission for the temporary mast does not signify that the subsequent proposals for a wind farm will be acceptable.”
