‘Big Wind’ opponents on Lanai launch TV commercial offensive against Castle & Cooke

Lanai’s “Big Wind” opponents are going on the offensive via a television commercial, in which they take aim at Castle & Cooke Hawaii Inc.’s planned 200-megawatt project that would utilize an undersea cable to pump electricity back to Oahu.

The 60-second TV commercial – which will air on KHNL, one Hawaii News Now’s partner stations – is aimed at Oahu residents, with the message that a wind farm would destroy the uniqueness of Lanai, while “providing less than 5 percent of Oahu’s electricity requirements.”

The Friends of Lanai spot features nice landscapes of Lanai, even showing a child at the beach learning how to throw a net. Then about halfway through it, a man, presumably from Lanai, is featured at certain areas around Honolulu, talking about how Lanai gets nothing out of the deal.

The commercial ends with contact information for the governor and the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission, asking viewers to take action against the wind farm.

Just last month, Castle & Cooke Hawaii told PBN that it remains committed to its half of the controversial 400-megawatt Big Wind project.

In February, the 200-megawatt Molokai portion was scrapped after landowner Molokai Ranch decided against having a wind farm on its land.
