Anger in Porthcawl after planning inspector allows two wind turbines at Newton Down

Campaigners have reacted with dismay after two wind turbines were allowed at Porthcawl.

Bridgend Council refused permission for the turbines at Newton Down.

But a Welsh Government inspector has overturned that decision, following a public meeting held earlier this year. The application, made by Renewable Energy Partnerships (REP), was fiercely opposed, with 640 letters of objection and a 1,174-signature petition.

Town and community councils around the area also opposed it. Newton councillor Ken Watts described the appeal decision as crass, adding: “It’s going to dominate the skyline of Porthcawl. This decision is going to adversely affect not only Porthcawl and Newton but the whole Glamorgan Heritage Coast for a generation.”

The inspector acknowledged the strength of opposition. But he concluded that, despite being large features in the landscape, would be acceptable in that location.

Permission was subject to conditions, including one that states the development must start within five years.
