Plymouth: Special permit for wind turbine waiting on DEP response

In Plymouth, the special permit that Stop & Shop LLC needs to construct a wind turbine behind their supermarket at Miles Standish Plaza—just off exit 6—has been held up again because the Planning Board is still waiting for information from the Department of Environmental Protection.

This is the second time around on this issue; Stop & Shop first appeared before the Planning Board in March. And, at their meeting this week the Board heard from Doug Sheadel of Modeling Specialties Company. On behalf of the applicant, he presented the Board with a sound analysis evaluating the effect of noise that would be produced from the 275-foot wind tower to the nearest property boundaries. But the sound study has not yet been reviewed by the DEP. Planning Board member Marc Garrett said he was not prepared to proceed without it.

“We’re looking for the Department to present an opinion as to the validity or the inaccuracy of the data being presented—we’re not questioning the accuracy or validity of it, but we want their sound people to review it. They’re better technically at assessing this data than the Planning Board is.”

On Board member Malcolm McGregor’s motion, the group voted unanimously to continue the case until Monday, June 10th to allow more time for DEP response. When the Board has that information, they can decide on their recommendation to the ZBA.

The ZBA is scheduled to hear the case on June 19th.
